When the Europeans first made contact with the Amazon region, certain plants became extinct abruptly after their arrival. This was due to the lack of resistances to diseases brought to the Amazon from Europe. Most of the trees that survived were palm trees. The Acai Berry comes from the Acai Palm which produces berries twice a year.
What made the trees life so well?
Acai fruit is astonishingly rich in a wide variety of nutrients and trace elements. The palm could survive for a entire year standing submerged in water. This miraculous ability to resist disease and survival is passed to those who consume the fruits. Rich in nutrients the Acai fruit allowed people to survive on it alone up to six months before showing signs of malnutrition.
Acai berries until a few years ago little was known. They are highly perishable and normally used immediately after picking. Acai Berries are now freeze dried and converted into Acai powder. Products such as Acai juice made from the little black berries with a purplish hued fruit have only been available for nearly 7 years.
The University of Florida has conducted a study of the benefits of Acai in humans. The research an important step toward learning what people may gain from using Acai berry supplements shows a great importance when added to your daily diet. Study results showed extracts from Acai berries triggered a self-destruct response in 86 percent of leukemia cells tested. Researchers cautioned that the study was not intended to show whether compounds found in Acai could prevent leukemia in people. Researchers also added that compounds found do show good activity against cancer cells in a model system is most likely to have beneficial effects in our bodies.
The University of Florida will nest investigate the effects of Acai’s antioxidants on healthy human subjects. The study is to determine how well the compounds are absorbed into the blood and how they may affect blood pressure and cholesterol levels
