Acai fruit, a little berry that grows in clusters much like grapes on a vine, is found in local gourmet food stores and herbal health food stores. According to a recent study at the University of Florida extracts from the Acai berries have been killing leukemia cells in a controlled laboratory setting. This is only proof as the proponents of the berry and its extreme health benefits have been embraced by many magazines and medical journals.
Published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the study shows extracts from Acai (ah-SAH’-ee) berries triggered a self-destruct response in up to 86 percent of leukemia cells tested, stated Stephen Talcott, an assistant professor with UF’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences.
“Acai berries are considered one of the richest fruit sources of antioxidants,” Talcott commented. “This study is an important step toward learning what people may gain from using beverages, dietary supplements and capsule forms of this product made with the berries.”
Acai berries are produced by a palm tree known scientifically as Euterpe oleracea, common in the flood plain areas of the Amazon River. When ripe, the berries are dark black with a purplish hue and the size of a blueberry. The berry contains a thin layer of edible pulp surrounding a large seed.
Brazilians have used Acai berries to treat digestive disorders and skin conditions. Current marketing efforts by retail merchants and Internet businesses suggest Acai products can help consumers lose weight, lower cholesterol and gain energy.
